Support Uneven for Establishing Energy District
By IAN FEIN
Vineyard Gazette

Edgartown selectmen are poised to play spoiler in an Island wide effort to put an energy conservation proposal before Vineyard voters this spring.

At their meeting last week, the selectmen all but announced that they would not place on the annual town meeting warrant a proposed article that would start the process of creating an Islandwide energy conservation district of critical planning concern (DCPC).

Energy Tip
Much of the energy consumed by a washer is used to heat water, so wash clothes on the "cold" or "warm" settings rather than "hot" whenever possible.

Environmental Education Update
Vegetarian is the New Prius
01.18.2007
By KATHY FRESTON

President Herbert Hoover promised "a chicken in every pot and a car in every garage." With warnings about global warming reaching feverish levels, many are having second thoughts about all those cars. It seems they should instead be worrying about the chickens.

Last month, the United Nations published a report on livestock and the environment with a stunning conclusion: "The livestock sector emerges as one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global." It turns out that raising animals for food is a primary cause of land degradation, air pollution, water shortage, water pollution, loss of biodiversity, and not least of all, global warming.

Waste Update
Cape to study options for trash
February 8, 2007
By PATRICK CASSIDY, STAFF WRITER
Cape Cod Times

SOUTH DENNIS - Cape towns are getting a jump on planning for the end of a 30-year collaborative contract with the SEMASS waste-to-energy facility in Rochester.

The Dennis Board of Selectmen Tuesday night unanimously agreed to appoint Dennis Town Administrator Robert Canevazzi and the town's Department of Public Works Director David Johansen to a contract committee to study options.

Dennis was the last of 13 towns to hear a presentation from the committee's organizer, Greg Smith, a waste energy specialist with the Cape Cod Commission.
