Justices Say E.P.A. Has Power to Act on Harmful Gases
By LINDA GREENHOUSE

WASHINGTON, April 2 — In one of its most important environmental decisions in years, the Supreme Court ruled on Monday that the Environmental Protection Agency has the authority to regulate heat-trapping gases in automobile emissions. The court further ruled that the agency could not sidestep its authority to regulate the greenhouse gases that contribute to global climate change unless it could provide a scientific basis for its refusal.

Energy Tip
Biking's pollution-free, but every gallon of gasoline burned in a vehicle creates about 20 lbs of climate change-causing CO2. A typical US family spends nearly $8,000 per year operating a car, while a bike might cost $50 for an annual tuneup. It shapes you up. Casual biking burns about 173 calories per hour.

When the state's top environmental official signed off on the Cape Wind project last week, attention shifted to Washington, where a pivotal federal review is due later this month.

Mercury in energy-saving bulbs worries scientists
Tue Mar 27, 7:08 PM ET

However potential environmental problems are manageable. The use of CFl is gaining momentum as an energy saving lighting option. Dealing with the trace amounts of Mercury contained in these bulbs is now also getting attention from retailers who are beginning to accept used bulbs for recycling.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - There's an old joke about the number of people it takes to change a light bulb. But because the newer energy-efficient kinds contain tiny amounts of mercury, the hard part is getting rid of them when they burn out.

Polar Bears

Theo spent half the stay standing on top of his loaded sled, a pair of small binoculars in hand. He scanned the horizon meticulously for signs of life, trying to separate the polar bears from the polar bear-shaped ice mounds on all sides. Several times today he called back to us and pointed towards a small dot moving in the distance. The far-sighted amongst us could just pick out the distinctive lumbering shape of a bear moving across the white landscape before us.
