Town, MVC Prevail in Moshup Trail Case
By JULIA WELLS
Vineyard Gazette
The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court last week upheld the town of Aquinnah and the Martha’s Vineyard Commission in a key leg of a complicated and long-running property rights case that will ultimately decide whether a large swath of rare coastal heathland along Moshup Trail remains forever wild or is opened up to private development.

Senate leader outlines 3 steps to meeting Obama's energy goals
By ALEX KAPLUN, Greenwire
Published: February 25, 2009
NY Times
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said today that Congress could meet President Obama's call for passing sweeping energy legislation this year -- including a climate cap-and-trade measure -- though it might take three bills to do it.

The Nevada Democrat outlined what he sees as a three-pronged strategy for meeting the goals Obama laid out in his speech to Congress last night and said the Senate could pass all the bills by the end of the year.

Study: Antarctic glaciers slipping swiftly seaward
By ELIANE ENGELER
Associated Press Writer

GENEVA (AP) -- Antarctic glaciers are melting faster across a much wider area than previously thought, scientists said Wednesday - a development that could lead to an unprecedented rise in sea levels. A report by thousands of scientists for the 2007-2008 International Polar Year concluded that the western part of the continent is warming up, not just the Antarctic Peninsula.

Offshore energy projects pile up
By Patrick Cassidy

February 22, 2009

The waters around Cape Cod and the Islands are crowded with big ideas and confused seas. In addition to the proposed Nantucket Sound wind farm, there are at least two other major renewable energy projects and a myriad of smaller ones proposed for the ocean off Massachusetts, most within a short sail of local shores.

Interview with a wind power executive
February 22, 2009
Blue H USA last year proposed building a 120-turbine floating wind farm 23 miles southwest of Martha's Vineyard. Since then, the company has applied to the Minerals Management Service, or MMS, to install a demonstration unit at its proposed site. The Times recently interviewed Blue H USA general manager Raymond Dackerman at a San Diego conference on finance and investment for wind energy projects.

Severe Drought Adds to Hardships in California
NY Times

MENDOTA, Calif. — The country’s biggest agricultural engine, California’s sprawling Central Valley, is being battered by the recession like farmland most everywhere. But in an unlucky strike of nature, the downturn is being deepened by a severe drought that threatens to drive up joblessness, increase food prices and cripple farms and towns.

Preparing for a Flood of Energy Efficiency Spending
By KATE GALBRAITH
Published: February 25, 2009
NY Times

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — To the casual eye, the basement of this city’s Firehouse 9 looks like a jumble of old hydrants, Dr Pepper cartons, rakes and random gear. To specialists in energy efficiency, the 1960s-era building is a mess of a different sort: wasteful hot water heaters for the firefighters’ showers, ancient refrigerators and outdated lights.

Wrapping up an elaborate energy audit, Knoxville is about to find out which of 99 city buildings are wasting the most energy. It hopes to begin repairs this summer, just in time to catch a tsunami of federal stimulus money earmarked for such unglamorous tasks as replacing light bulbs and fixing leaky insulation.

Genetically Modified Crops Update
Crop Scientists Say Biotechnology Seed Companies Are Thwarting Researching
By ANDREW POLLACK
Published: February 19, 2009
NY Times

Biotechnology companies are keeping university scientists from fully researching the effectiveness and environmental impact of the industry’s genetically modified crops, according to an unusual complaint issued by a group of those scientists.

“No truly independent research can be legally conducted on many critical questions,” the scientists wrote in a statement submitted to the Environmental Protection Agency. The E.P.A. is seeking public comments for scientific meetings it will hold next week on biotech crops.
