FED UP- Northeast Efforts to Reduce Greenhouse Gases Thwarted by Feds
The Boston Globe, Beth Daley, 15 Mar 2004
Efforts by U.S. states in the northeast to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are falling short, in part due to unsympathetic federal policies. While they see plenty of room for more aggressive efforts, even the region's most vocal environmental critics acknowledge that northeastern states have taken unprecedented steps to reduce emissions. The biggest initiative has been establishing carbon-dioxide trading programs, which has turned out to be a torturously complex process.
All of the region's efforts, however, are hampered by a federal government that refuses to raise fuel-efficiency standards for vehicles or set strict limits on CO2 emissions from power plants. Currently, the region is falling short of its goal to reduce emissions 12 percent by 2010; in fact, emissions are rising. Still, officials and enviros hope that the region's efforts can be a model that inspires broader change. "Showing a region this large can make reductions sends a critically important message out to the country and the world," said Cindy Luppi of Clean Water Action.

On the Tisbury Waterfront
Marnie Stanton, Vineyard Conservation Almanac
Need concrete evidence of team cooperation, problem solving, perseverance, and common sense in solving environmental problems on the Vineyard? Melinda Loberg, Harriet Barrow, and the board of Tisbury Waterways, Inc. (TWI) point with pride to the concrete catch basins capturing toxic road runoff around the town’s sensitive water bodies.
TWI routinely works with town and state entities to take on Tisbury water related problems and fix them. When Vineyard Haven harbor and Tashmoo were threatened by pollution from road runoff, they rallied to the cause and took action. Working closely with several town boards and the DPW, they concluded that strategically located concrete vaults (called catch basins) were the answer.

Wind energy: Saving lives, dollars
By SOLON ECONOMOU
Cape Cod Times Editorial- March 18, 2004
We've all heard the arguments, pro and con, regarding the proposed wind farm in Nantucket Sound. I'm adding two more issues that most of you can relate to: How much, in American greenbacks, the wind farm will save your family, and how many lives wind power will save and health problems it will prevent.
Last week, I attended both wind farm rallies, the one sponsored by Cape Wind and the one sponsored by the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound, at the Statehouse in Boston. Neither of the above issues was addressed, so I will stick my neck out and address both.
